TOMATERA

Many years ago, a friend wanted to start growing hanging tomatoes again in the Mallorcan town of Banyalbufar. He asked me to think of a way to hang them so that they would last a long time without having to sew them to the branch as was traditionally done.

In my spare time, I experimented with countless paper contraptions to support the tomatoes, but none of them convinced me; they were expensive and not very durable.

The idea came to me one day while I was looking at the mesh from which a thousand pots hung in my kitchen. This variety of tomato lasts all winter as long as they are separated from each other, so the problem would be solved if they were separated from the wall and from each other. Two metal meshes spaced apart from each other and from the wall by a simple anchor could hold tomatoes suspended in each grid. A versatile design that works for both tomatoes and hanging various utensils.
